Dr. Terry Q. O’Brien is a storyteller, educator, and world traveler who blends imagination, history, and disciplined research into compelling fiction and reflective storytelling. His work spans historical fiction, young adult adventure, poetry, and literary collections, all united by a fascination with memory, human nature, and the enduring power of stories.
His newest book, "Rudolf Höss: A Liar’s Journey Through Darkness," is a work of documentary historical fiction grounded in primary sources, trial records, and verified history. Through reconstructed scenes and historical analysis, the novel examines the life of the Auschwitz commandant and the machinery of ideology, bureaucracy, and personal choice that enabled genocide.
Terry is also the author of "Fragments of Word and Wonder: A Collection of Tales, Poems, and Childhood Magic," a collection of whimsical stories, reflective poems, and imaginative fables that celebrate curiosity, memory, and the wonder hidden in everyday life. His young adult historical science fiction adventure, "The Quest for the Lost Amber Room," takes readers on a time-traveling journey through real historical settings, including the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair and the mystery of the Russian Amber Room. The novel is the first in a planned series designed to spark curiosity about history while fueling young readers’ imaginations.
Dr. O’Brien earned his doctorate in Leadership Administration in 2005 and has spent more than thirty years as a teacher, educator, and school leader. He currently serves on the faculty at Northeastern Illinois University, where he continues to bring storytelling, creativity, and critical thinking into the classroom. His background in filmmaking and live theatre further informs his vivid, immersive narrative style.
Drawing inspiration from historical sites and cultural landscapes across Europe and beyond, Terry writes stories that explore both the extraordinary and the deeply human.
