Marcus Baynes-Rock

Marcus Baynes-Rock is an anthropologist who works at the intersection of human and animal cultures. His first book, Among the Bone Eaters, is a memoir of his encounters with urban hyenas in the ancient city of Harar in eastern Ethiopia. This book has since been translated into Italian as La Vita Segreta delle Iena. His second book, Crocodile Undone explores the domestication of native Australian animals and how the animals resist neoliberal modes of ecological unmaking. These multispecies stories have attracted widespread attention. He has been interviewed on NPR, Triple J, Radio New Zealand, and Radio 3 Scienza, and been an advisor to BBCs Planet Earth II series and ARTE’s ‘The Hyenas of Harar.’ He was awarded the H. Neil Smith prize for literature.
