Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Kayla Armstrong is a writer with a passion for storytelling that empowers, educates, and resonates. As the youngest of four, she developed a strong sense of curiosity and a love for understanding the world around her. Over time, this evolved into a deep awareness of social justice issues, which would later shape both her academic journey and her work as an author.
The idea for Embracing the Crown was born from a personal poem she wrote during her undergraduate poetry class—one that explored the realities of colorism in our society. What started as raw, heartfelt verses soon grew into a larger vision: a story that not only amplifies the voices of dark-skinned girls but also challenges societal beauty standards and the biases that persist today. Through rich storytelling and deeply personal themes, Kayla brings those words to life, creating a narrative that celebrates self-acceptance, identity, and the power of embracing one's truth.
Kayla earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Texas and is pursuing a Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Houston. Her education has deepened her understanding of systemic issues, social inequalities, and the importance of advocacy—values that she weaves into her writing to spark awareness and inspire change.
With Embracing the Crown, Kayla invites readers into a journey of reflection, healing, and empowerment—one that honors the beauty and strength of Black womanhood while shedding light on the social issues shaping our world.
