Johnie Guerra

Johnie J. Guerra was born in Lawton, Oklahoma, but his family hails from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and Brownsville, Texas. After completing his military service at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, he fell in love with San Antonio and decided to make it his home. He earned a bachelor's degree in Mexican American Studies at The University of Texas at San Antonio, which sparked his poetry writing. His poetry reflects pride in Chicano identity and illuminates Chicano history. He employs English, Spanish, Spanglish, and Nahuatl and incorporates ancient Mesoamerican beliefs. His work seeks to reveal what it means to be Chicano in the twenty-first century United States.
