Joe Akpan

Early Childhood

In the heart of West Africa, Joe Akpan's life began. Joe was the third of ten children. He grew up in a lively, middle-class family where mischief and laughter were constant. His father, Edward Akpan Senior, traded the disciplined life of a police officer for the creative realms of photography. Additionally, Edward fully embraced intellectual exploration and became a bookstore owner. Consequently, books were enduring allies in Joe's developmental years.

Though Joe enjoyed the magical wonders of a great novel, his true passion was technology. "Back in grade school, I was hooked on electronics and gadgets," Joe shared with a spark in his eyes. "Curiosity was my devious best friend, leading me to take apart everything in sight. Reassembling them, well, that was a different story. My dad, with his firm cultural views on discipline, was not too pleased with my technological adventures. You can imagine how that story went." Joe's youth was marked by a passion for technology and a deep spiritual immersion. His grandfather, a devout deacon, created a small altar at home that bore the presence of saints. It served as a modest yet meaningful symbol of faith. "Visits to Grandpa's always included morning and evening Mass. Being close to that altar significantly affected me; it felt like I had a divine connection that was grounding and uplifting."

Early Faith

Likewise, Joe's Sundays radiated with a distinctive warmth, the day's cadence marked by leisure strolls to church with his mother. The embodiment of both tenderness and strength, she would gently place a coin in the middle of his palm at church. After being enveloped with love and faith, the coin found its rightful place inside the offering plate. "I used to think the pastor would wait until the church left, then send the money soaring through the air, with heights high enough for God to reach," Joe reminisced with a sentimental radiance.

Early Hobbies

Beyond technology and faith, Joe's grade school experiences were pivotal in crafting the unique lens through which he viewed life. Alongside his brother Ed, he trod the earth as a Boy Scout with a sense of adventure and camaraderie. In the school's choir, Joe's voice melded with his sister Anieama, creating a youthful symphony of hope and harmony. Likewise, with skill and grace, Joe's fingers glided over the flute and produced eloquent melodies throughout the school's band.

These early encounters were delicate brushstrokes on the canvas of Joe's life, shaping his thoughts and values as he journeyed through childhood. "Our days were steep in discipline, yet there was an essence of liberation through the rigor," he reminisced. "Each misstep resulted in a physical pop, though jarring then, these experiences created an aura of fondness and appreciation for the impartation of life's lessons."

Falling in Love in America

With Joe's adolescent years behind him, he began to imagine a life beyond his birthplace, specifically in the United States. He experienced a whirlwind of emotions surrounding the future, a mixture of trepidation and anticipation. He found solace in the recollection that his brother Ed had succeeded in the land of opportunity. "Knowing Ed was already in the U.S. gave me a sense of courage amongst my ambivalence. His leap of faith cleared a path for me, offering a guiding light amongst the turbulent waves of doubt."

Upon arriving in Michigan, Joe experienced love not once but twice. "I still vividly remember the day Ed took me to the school's computer lab," Joe detailed with exhilaration. "That was my first introduction to computers. I read about them back home, I studied them back home, but I had never seen a computer until that day. What I saw wasn't just fascinating – it was captivating. I was observing the emergence of a new language between man and machine." In Joe's case, man's best friend didn't come on four legs, instead four ports.

When Joe's attention turned to computers, they captivated his mind completely. Unbeknownst to him, a profound and instant passion was about to captivate his heart. In college, Joe's path intertwined with a radiant presence named Marie. At just nineteen, she carried an aura of wisdom and youthful enchantment. "I knew I was ready to start a life with someone," Joe explained with a gentle certainty in his voice. "Playing the field wasn't for me. I sought a bond blessed by God. Marie held a similar ambition close to her heart. She was beautiful serendipity wrapped in the flesh." Their decision to marry was a confluence of love, faith, and timing. Joe says, "It was as if heaven decided to smile through two souls."

Trouble in Paradise

Beneath a perpetually sunny sky, Joe's life took an unexpected turn in August 2022. An intruder, though silent, wreaked havoc inwardly and outwardly. He found himself locked in a relentless battle as he courageously navigated through the uncharted territory of stage 4 cancer. "Before the cancer diagnosis, the pain was so insidious that it felt like thunder was spreading through my veins. With a heavy heart, I realized I had to sacrifice my career to embark on the unanticipated path of early retirement. In hindsight, I don't know which one was worse, having a hurting body or having a hurting wallet," Joe chuckled.

Joe left his company just shy of his 25th anniversary, a bitter pill to swallow. The abrupt end to Joe's career left a void, a chapter closed far too soon. Cancer, the unexpected architect of his fate, redrew the blueprint of his life without warning. In navigating unforeseen challenges, Joe uncovered a profound philosophical insight: life's journey is shrouded in mystery, marked by unforeseeable twists, and imbued with enigmatic destinies. Therefore, the true measure of resilience lies in a person's ability to adapt and find a new purpose when the script is unexpectedly rewritten. Joe declared, "Cancer may have taken my career, but I refuse to let it steal my passion."

After retirement, Joe consequently channeled his passion into cancer awareness and the creation of inspirational content so others may overcome life's adversity, as he did.
