Dr. Athena M. Thomas is a seasoned professional with a thirty-year career dedicated to advocating for and working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her journey began with a passion for social justice and a commitment to improving the lives of those often marginalized by society. Early in her career, Dr. Thomas worked as a direct support professional, providing hands-on care and support to individuals with disabilities. This experience gave her invaluable insights into the challenges and needs of the individuals she served and the professionals supporting them.
She quickly advanced to leadership roles within various nonprofit organizations, focusing on developing and implementing community-based and long-term care services. Her work involved collaborating with stakeholders, including families, caregivers, and policymakers, to create inclusive and supportive environments for individuals with disabilities.
Dr. Thomas is a certified mediator and arbitrator, skills she has used to resolve conflicts and foster better communication within the disability services sector.
