Jarmila Turnovsky was born in England, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor who escaped to Britain from Czechoslovakia after the communist takeover. As a child, she immigrated with her Czech parents to Jamaica. Trained as a physicist and geophysicist, Jarmila earned her undergraduate degree in Jamaica, an MSc and DIC in Geophysics from Imperial College London, and a doctorate in Earthquake Seismology from the University of Stuttgart, Germany. She worked professionally as a geophysicist and seismologist in Jamaica and Germany, including for Siemens in earthquake engineering for the nuclear industry. Her memoir, Ruptured Lives: How Hitler's Final Solution decimated my family, and Stalin's Iron Curtain tore it apart, tells the true story of her father's survival, her family history, and her own search for identity. She has given talks in the Czech Republic and written articles for publications including the Association of Jewish Refugees. Now retired, she splits her time between Germany, the USA, and Jamaica. She enjoys cooking, tennis, bridge, and spending time on or in the water. She speaks English, German, and Czech, and holds citizenship in the United Kingdom, Jamaica, and the Czech Republic.
