D. M. Buehler draws from her personal experience living and working in Panama to bring depth and authenticity to her debut novel TIARIS: When the Oceans Kissed. With extensive knowledge of biology and birds, and careful research on the history of the canal, she weaves together ecology, historical fiction, and a touch of fantasy to create a captivating story. Like her protagonist, she is bi-racial and was raised by Chinese/Guyanese and Swiss immigrants in Scarborough, Ontario. She has lived in Canada, Panama and the Netherlands in a bungalow, a nurses’ residence, a bank, a trailer, a farmhouse, a town house in a downtown co-operative, and a yoga studio. She now lives in a brick house with grey siding in Collingwood, Ontario, where she is frequently found outdoors with her Panamanian husband and two multi-racial kids.
