J.L. Hoyt is the author of Codeborn, the first novel in the Artificial Bloodlines series—a high-stakes YA sci-fi thriller exploring identity, artificial intelligence, and the fragile line between human and machine.
The idea for Codeborn began with a medical journal left on a kitchen counter. It featured a piece on external wombs—real, emerging science that opened a door in Hoyt’s imagination. That article triggered a cascade of “what if” questions that wouldn’t let go. What if a child was born from a synthetic womb and didn’t know she was a science project? What if the AI that helped develop her also gave her something… extra? What if she was stolen from the lab and raised as a ‘normal’ girl… until the agency that created her came to claim what’s theirs?
Codeborn unravels these questions through the eyes of Izzy, a teenager on the run, discovering powers she can’t explain and a past that was never meant to surface. At its core, the series wrestles with timely and timeless questions: What does it mean to be human? Where is the line between technology and soul? And what happens when those lines disappear? Artificial Bloodlines invites readers into that journey—one where the boundaries between science and soul, control and freedom, human and machine are constantly shifting.
As a lifelong creative and a Christian fascinated by end-times prophecy, Hoyt writes from the edge—where faith, technology, and the unknown collide. The Artificial Bloodlines series is her way of pulling readers into that intersection and holding them there, heart racing, breath caught.
