Dr. Yashima L. Thomas-Jones
Dr. Yashima L. Thomas-Jones is a proud native of New Jersey, the daughter of Mrs. Roslyn and the late Victor Thomas, and the sister of Haneefah Thomas. She resides in Union, New Jersey, with her husband, Jeffrey Jones, and cherishes her role as an aunt to Eniyah, Laila, and Haneef, as well as a godmother to Skylar, Mya-Ashilee, Nasir, Dontaye, and Amauri.
Dr. Yashima earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from New Jersey City University in 1997, followed by a Master of Arts in Special Education in 2011. She pursued a second master’s degree in urban education leadership in 2015. In 2021, she began her doctoral studies at Marymount University, where she graduated with a Doctorate in Education in May 2024. During her doctoral journey, Dr. Yashima presented her research at the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED), showcasing her dedication to advancing equity and excellence in education.
Her professional journey began with roles at the Occupational Center of Orange, Hudson County Correctional Facility, and the Division of Youth and Family Services, where she served adults and youth in need. In 2004, she transitioned into education, answering what she felt was God’s call to impact children’s lives. Dr. Yashima began teaching at Liberty Academy Charter School and later joined the Elizabeth Public School system, where she has served as a special education teacher and learning language disabilities instructor for over 20 years. Her focus has always been on fostering equity, inclusion, and student empowerment.
In addition to her classroom work, Dr. Yashima has extensive experience in early intervention, helping parents support their children’s developmental milestones. She has also demonstrated her commitment to community service by organizing an annual back-to-school drive since 2008. In collaboration with her church and local organizations, she distributes backpacks, uniforms, and school supplies to families in need.
Dr. Yashima’s teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in her faith, guided by Isaiah 61:1–3, and her belief in the potential of every child. She strives to create supportive, inclusive environments that inspire students to achieve greatness. Her unwavering dedication has left a lasting impact on her students, their families, and the broader educational community.
