Jim Lichatowich, is the author of three books. His latest book co-authored with Rick Williams is Managed Extinction: The Decline of Wild Salmon and Steelhead in the Pacific Northwest (Caxton Press Nov 2024). His other two books are Salmon without Rivers: A History of the Pacific Salmon Crisis (Island Press) and Salmon People and Place: A Biologist’s Search for Salmon Recovery (OSU Press).
Jim worked on Pacific salmon issues as a researcher, manager, and scientific advisor for more than 50 years. He specialized in the history of salmon management and the life history and status of salmon and steelhead populations, and the development of restoration plans in the Pacific Northwest. Jim was formerly the Chief of Fisheries Research and Assistant Chief of Fisheries for the State of Oregon. He served ten years on the Independent Scientific Advisory Board for the Columbia River salmon restoration program. He served four years on the State of Oregon's Independent Multidisciplinary Science Team. He has served on four independent scientific review panels for the California Bay-Delta Authority and wrote extensively throughout his career.
After moving to Columbia City, Oregon in 2000, Jim became a woodcarver and enjoyed carving birds and fish.
