Author Life Questionnaire
). Could you tell us three interesting facts about yourself? I am a forensic DNA analyst and most of my writing experiences are scientific in nature; I love to mountain bike in Florida’s man/woman-made terrain; I have always wanted to sign and play the piano, but the only people who enjoy my singing are my children and for good reason.
). In your own life, what influences and inspires you to write? My children provide daily inspiration. As they grow and learn, they become increasingly more curious about the world around them. They ask a lot of questions. Some are quite challenging to explain to them. I struggle to find the right way to teach and explain things to them in an effective and meaningful way. Writing seems to ease that challenge.
). Which book or author has had the biggest impact on you, and why? Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper. Each of the characters in the book has a deep, personal struggle. I can empathize with each character’s unique experiences. I believe the spiritual health of humanity could benefit from a less ego-centric focus. It is important to see value and purpose in everything and everyone.
). Can you tell me about the book? The book was inspired by a teaching moment in parenthood. My son, Toby, is an avid Lego engineer. Though he is largely self-sufficient, he struggles from time to time and demands immediate assistance. At the time, I was preoccupied with caring for his younger sister and my husband was spending days and nights in the hospital with his dad who fell ill with complications from COVID. This was an opportunity to learn the values of patience and gratitude.
). What were your first experiences with writing? My first creative writing experience as an adult was also a children’s picture book about being kind and welcoming friends for who they are, not for what they look like. Just like this book, it was inspired by a teaching moment in parenthood.
). In your opinion, what are the key ingredients for a good story or novel? The key ingredients for a good story are being confident in your message and knowing to whom you are delivering that message.
). How long should an author spend on their craft each day? There is no specific allotted amount of time. Seize the creative moment whenever it presents itself. Think about your own life and experiences and bring those into the story.
). What was the most challenging part of writing this book, and what did you learn from writing it? The most challenging part of writing this book was establishing the final draft. Authors typically go through several drafts before finding the precise version to deliver the intended outcome. That is what I learned from writing this book.
). What common pitfalls should aspiring writers avoid? Do not try to mimic another author whom you admire or find successful. Tell your story, from your perspective, the best way you know how, and keep working on your craft.
). What writing advice would you offer to your younger self? Take your ideas and make them a reality.
