ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I was never destined for greatness.
Is ordinariness a word? Or a thing? If so, then that is what I was always destined for.
And boy, did I nail it.
Being in the company of good people was always enough for me. Good people who were not only capable in their chosen field, but who maintained a cheery and positive outlook on life. And people I trusted who had my back.
I was fortunate to work with some incredibly talented people. One former colleague went on to become Chief Executive of the Football Association and was later appointed as Chief Information Officer of the Cabinet Office. One became Commercial Director of Manchester United and, in a later role, led England’s bid for the 2018 World Cup.
A former teammate led the project to procure and implement the London Congestion Charge and later became the Director General of Information for the National Health Service.
Some of my former colleagues are now able to add letters after their names, having received recognition from HRH. Presumably, my award is still in the post.
Just occasionally, most noticeably on the football field, I rubbed shoulders with greatness. I played alongside former internationals from every one of the home countries, each of whom played over 25 games for their respective country. Fellow team members included individuals who won League Championships, FA Cups and UEFA Cups. I played against international players who went on to become managers of Premier League and international teams.
And all of them have me to thank.
I helped to make them all look good.
