Yvonne Sam

Yvonne Sam is a distinguished author, educator, and highly credentialed nursing professional whose work spans multiple domains. Her poetry collection, Life’s Many Faces, is featured in the National Library of Poetry Anthology River of Dreams, which earned the prestigious Editor’s Choice Award. Her other notable work includes Dusting Off Dreams Volume IX, published by Quill Books in Harlingen, Texas.

Yvonne’s extensive career in nursing and education is marked by a deep commitment to service. She has been honored with the 2014 Governor General of Canada Caring Canadian Citizen Award, the 2014 Black History Month Laureate distinction, and recognition as one of the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women of 2024. With nearly three decades of experience, she has excelled as a Head Nurse, Nursing Examiner for the Order of Nurses of Quebec, and a Secondary School Teacher with the English Montreal School Board.

A trained nurse, midwife, and mental health nurse, Yvonne is also certified in multiple healthcare domains. She holds the titles of State Registered Nurse, State Certified Midwife, and State Registered Mental Nurse from England, where she trained and resided for over thirteen years. Her educational background includes a Master’s Degree in Education from McGill University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Athabasca University, a New York State Nursing Licensure from Pace University, and a Diploma in Adult Education from Concordia University.

Her writing extends to journalism, where she contributes regularly to Montreal Community Contact and has been published in prominent outlets, including the Montreal Gazette, Huffington Post, Toronto Star, and Pride Magazine.

In her recent memoir, Behind the Scenes in Nursing, Yvonne offers a candid exploration of the nursing profession, enriched by her experiences across England, the USA, and Canada. The book provides a profound and sometimes unsettling look at the realities within healthcare, advocating for meaningful improvements to support both nurses and patients. Born in Guyana and now residing in Montreal, Canada, Yvonne Sam’s diverse background and dedicated career reflect her profound impact on healthcare, literature, and education.
