David James Bulman

James was born in Canada.

He spent a couple of years teaching in Botswana. Then he worked for three decades with the United Nations World Food Programme in the provision of food to people for humanitarian and development reasons. During his career, he has lived in eight African countries: North Korea, Israel, East Timor, Italy, and Canada.

For most of his international career, he was in Africa, where he spent 26 years. During this time, he has witnessed the continent transforming. At the beginning there were no mobile phones or internet, and he communicated back home through letters sent through the postal service and very occasionally through expensive long-distance calls. In the earliest period, he used “travelers’ checks” to carry funds since it was difficult to find any place that would accept credit cards. Of course, the internet changed all of this, to the point where it's hard to even imagine living with those constraints. However, even now, many people in Africa remain unconnected.

James's career has focused on feeding people who are in need. He has taken an active interest in food security and nutrition and all that affects them.

James developed a broad range of interests during his international work. Some of the topics include healthy eating, nutrition, youth, education, and educational technology. He also has a strong interest in African cultures and peoples, particularly their literature, their proverbs, and the gracious manner in which they cherish their elderly.

James is married with a son and three stepchildren. He is currently living in Toronto, Canada.
