Hailing from the Texas Panhandle, Susan K. Fairchild swapped the wide-open skies for the bustling streets of New York City to work in foundations committed to improving education. “The Turkey Hands” is her first adventure into children’s literature. The daughter of a first-grade teacher, Susan spent her childhood cutting out displays for her mother’s classroom bulletin boards. The going rate for these early artistic endeavors was a 50-cent soda from the teacher’s lounge — a fair trade by any child’s accounting.
