John K. Lander

John Lander came late to authorship of historical events. As one of my children put it; "Dad, most authors have given up writing by the time you started!" He's right; from the publication in 2003 of "Itinerant Temples - Tent Methodism 1814 - 1832", based on my PhD thesis, over thirty books and papers have been published, including four chapel histories, several aspects of 19th century nonconformist church history and the Cornish teetotal movement. As one reviewer wrote; "Lander is a banker by profession and a social historian by natural inclination." During the last three years, I've written the history of Sparsholt College, Hampshire - "A Place of Transformation", the story of Barton Stacey Methodist Church, the Congregational part of the history of the United Church, Winchester, the "Forgotten Lives of Sparsholt Students", and, published in late 2024 by The History Press, "Don't Delay - Enrol Today", The Women's Land Army in Hampshire. And, right now, I've almost finished the history of the Band of Hope, founded in 1847 to persuade children to refrain from alcohol consumption by signing a teetotal pledge.

I'm Chair of Winchester Housing Trust Ltd., a local housing association, a church trustee, and a member of our local history group. These activities are in addition to being husband to an incredibly understanding wife, father of three encouraging children and their spouses, and grandfather of six amazing grandchildren.
