Dr. Pavel Brunssen is a Research Associate and Alfred Landecker Lecturer at Heidelberg University's Research Center on Antigypsyism. His research focuses on antisemitism, antigypsyism, collectives memories, and popular cultures. Brunssen earned his PhD in German Studies from the University of Michigan, where he received the Marshall Weinberg Prize for his dissertation, which is the basis for his upcoming book, The Making of "Jew Clubs": Performing Jewishness and Antisemitism in European Football and Fan Cultures (Indiana University Press, 2025). This book delves into how four major European football clubs are sites for negotiating Jewish identity and antisemitism in contemporary society.
Co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Transparent, Brunssen has published extensively and presented his research internationally. His other works include Antisemitismus in Fußball-Fankulturen (2021) and Football and Discrimination: Antisemitism and Beyond (2021). His academic background includes an M.A. from the Center for Research on Antisemitism at Technische Universität Berlin and a B.A. from Hochschule Düsseldorf.
