Jill of all trades, and even mastered a few, writing has been my go-to since childhood. Whether it was a short poem to capture the warmth of a crackling fire, or reams about my imaginary world filled with dream horses and vast green pastures, writing has always been my way of bringing my inner world to life. As I grew older, writing became more of a cathartic process, often never meant to be read, and sometimes not even kept.
My first published book, Even Bears Make Nests (2018), a snapshot of my world as a stepmother, was actually the third book I had in mind. The first also personal, covering my life from 0 to 30-something. The second was to be a continuation, starting with my move to Spain, where I lived for some 26 years since the age of 36. Both books have titles, and the first even has an outline for 27 chapters. But after losing the first four chapters in a computer meltdown about 20 years ago, I put it on hold. Plus, I didn’t believe in myself, thinking, “Who’d be interested in my life anyway?”
As my career in the horse world progressed, I held courses that required detailed written explanations, provided client-specific husbandry reports, wrote equestrian blogs, and contributed to magazines. People began to comment on how much they enjoyed my approach and style. (If I ever get around to writing that “first” book, you’ll learn why I lacked the courage to complete it, and the second book will reveal what it took for me to finally gain that confidence.)
Along life’s path, I also discovered a love for domestic experiments and creations. I became a pretty good “cheflet,” enjoying the thrill of trying new flavours, foods, and processes. Living “where Christ lost his last sandal” (as the Spanish saying goes for those of us at the end of a beaten track ;) ), and before the internet became a big thing, I relied on trial and error. I learned about sprouting seeds, brewing kombucha, and yes, keeping the larder stocked with fresh goodies that could survive hot summers and surprisingly chilly winters. More recently, I became a sourdough geek, but that came with tons (I’ll stick with imperial here, because it’s heavier than metric) of information from the wonder web, much of it confusing or downright misleading and often overwhelming. And that’s why, with a little push and poke from a couple of friends, I wrote “Have No Doubt, Sprout”, “Fizz and Ferment”, and “Seal the Deal”. I trust you’ll find they cut through those un-coppiced woods, leading you straight to the trees, so you can enjoy uncomplicated, happy and successful germinating, brewing, and canning. I’ve a few more ideas up my sleeve, and I’ll be putting pen to paper soon!
Ciao, for now, my Lovelies

**Sept 15th Update:**
My Lovelies, I wanted to give you a little update. The bones of the next book in *The Homestead Harvest Series* are all prepared for you. It’s called *"Lock, Stock and Can"*, and I’m excited to share it with you. However, due to a devastating situation caused by scammers, I haven’t been able to take any new photos for the book because I haven’t been able to do any canning of my own this season or last. Our home has been packed up for over 14 months now (it’s quite the story, and will see two people in court facing a whole list of charges for fraud and more). Our lives have been completely on hold.
But don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten you, my lovely readers. As soon as I’m back on my feet and able to stock my own larder again, *"Lock, Stock and Can"* will be ready for you.
This one’s going to change the way you think about home preserving! In *Lock, Stock and Can*, I’m going to show you how to confidently water bath all those low-acid foods like meats, dairy, and more. You’ll learn the safe, simple steps to make sure your food stays fresh and delicious, all while keeping out those nasty little bacteria like botulism (yes, the same one folks put in their faces to get rid of wrinkles!).
We’ll chat about the equipment you need, bust a few myths, and get you canning like a pro, whether you’re making hearty soups, savoury stews, or storing up butter for the winter. And don’t worry, I’ll be right there with you, like an old friend in your kitchen, explaining everything in a way that just makes sense.
So hang tight, it’s coming as soon as possible, and I can’t wait to share all my best tips with you!
**Oct 27th Update**
Spain's Equine Handbook is now on the shelves. After years of saying "one day," I finally committed to the marathon task of writing this essential guide, drawing on 26 years of experience as an equestrian in Spain. As a professional service provider and seasoned Endurance competitor, I've poured everything I know into this book for anyone planning to bring their horse to Spain or embarking on horse ownership here, whether for top-tier competition or a peaceful pasture life.
This book is a one-stop resource on navigating the complexities of bureaucracy, finding quality forage and feed, registering with federations, understanding facility requirements, and much more. Owners of the book can also join an exclusive Facebook group, where they’ll receive updates on regulations, recommendations for trusted products and services, and valuable tips on keeping horses healthy and happy under the Spanish sun.
