Glenda Goodman

Glenda Goodman is a music historian in Philadelphia. Her work explores the intersection of material culture, gender, and race in early American music. Her prize-winning book, Cultivated by Hand: Amateur Musicians in the Early American Republic (2020), examines the gendered ways elite white music-making was critical to the cultural work of nation-formation following the American Revolution. Her co-edited volume, American Contact: Objects of Intercultural Encounters and the Boundaries of Book History (2024), explores the dynamics of intercultural encounters through the medium of material texts. She is an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Pennsylvania.
