Anthony D. Smith

Anthony Smith is a licensed mental health counselor with 23 years of experience in Massachusetts. He has worked in facilities and private practice performing diagnostic evaluations, psychotherapy and crisis assessments. This includes 21 years in the forensic arena, where he currently provides assessments for the juvenile courts, along with supervising and training interns and new court clinicians across the state.

Early on, Anthony witnessed the damage that inaccurate diagnosis and misinformed treatment can lead to. He naturally evolved a keen interest in differential diagnostic assessment and in training and educating new therapists and practitioners, and providing private supervisory consultation.

As a professor, Anthony has taught abnormal psychology, created courses on the life experiences of people with mental illness, and continues to supervise graduate student counseling practicums.

When not providing clinical or supervisory services, Anthony also enjoys giving talks and trainings on a variety of psychotherapy and diagnostic matters. He also writes about psychology, and since 2021 has maintained Up & Running, a blog aimed at students and new practitioners, on Psychology Today. Getting Started as a New Therapist: 50+ Tips for Clinical Effectiveness, is his first book.
