Reading English at Christ's College, Cambridge in the 1960s, I became aware of contested approaches to teaching the national language. This interest in the epistemology of the subject grew through my career as an English teacher in secondary schools in the UK and US. Later, researching and teaching Cultural and Media Studies at the University of the West of England, Bristol, I wrote a doctorate on adolescent literacy at the birth of the internet. I am currently editor of English in Education.
