Sara H. Fowler
Children’s author Sara H. Fowler knew from an early age that she would one day be a storyteller. As she became immersed in the world of picture books after having her own children, she was inspired by their imaginations which, in turn, led to story ideas. In particular, “castle of knots” was a term her young daughter coined when describing an especially tangled bedhead, with her mother—the knight—freeing the princess from her snarls, paving the way for her debut picture book, Castle of Knots.
My Mom is a Dragon is Sara's second book. It will tackle the issue of postpartum mood disorders through the use of the lore of dragons. The book aims to help families discuss this difficult subject with their older children.
Sara enjoys using fantasy tropes to explain reality to children. In blending everyday experiences, such as the morning routine of hair wrangling or a mother who is struggling with postpartum depression and anxiety, with fantastical elements, she hopes to foster a love of imagination in young children that stays with them long after the book is closed. And for parents, her goal is to facilitate conversations that will help families grow.
A majority of Sara’s life has been dedicated in various ways to supporting children, parents, and reading. As a secondary ELA teacher for seven years, she often used picture books and children’s poetry to teach literary concepts to high schoolers, including extended metaphor, allusion, and symbolism—figures of speech later prevalent in her own picture book. She ended her term as the president of a local MOMS Club (Moms Offering Moms Support) in 2024, a role which had her supporting stay-at-home parents, organizing guest speakers on parent and family-related issues, and participating in community service including fundraising for children facing serious medical challenges.
When she isn’t writing inventive stories for families to enjoy together, Sara likes traveling, reading, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and spending time with her family. She lives with her husband and their two children, a seven-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, along with their dog, Duchess, in Georgia.
