Pierre Sokolsky

Pierre Sokolsky is an experimental particle astrophysicist. He is a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy (emeritus) at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. His research interests lie in ultra-high energy cosmic rays physics, particularly elucidating the cosmic ray spectrum and composition. Prof. Sokolsky has played a number of leadership roles in a series of experiments utilizing the atmospheric air fluorescence technique to study ultra-high energy cosmic rays. These include the Fly’s Eye, High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) and most recently the Telescope Array (TA) observatories. He was the spokesman for the HiRes and TA experiment. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the recipient of the Panofsky Prize in High Energy Physics “ for the development of the atmospheric air fluorescence technique.” He was a Sloan and Guggenheim Fellow, Chair of the Physics Department as well as Dean of the College of Science at the University of Utah.
