Richard Finley – From Thread to Brand: Stitching Passion into a Business
Hi, I’m Richard Finley—a 42-year-old creator, dreamer, shirt maker, and brand builder. I live a wonderfully whole life with my fantastic wife, who’s been my anchor since the early days when I was still stitching shirts in my bedroom just for fun. Today, I run my successful apparel brand—but believe me, it didn’t start with a business plan or a fancy marketing team. It started with one shirt… and a whole lot of curiosity.
My journey began back when I was a teenager, just experimenting with fabric and designs. I didn’t know what I was doing, I just knew I loved doing it. I’d spend hours sketching out ideas, learning to cut fabric, sewing by hand or with whatever machine I could borrow. I started making shirts not for sale, but for friends. I’d gift them as birthday presents, game night surprises, or just because I thought, “Hey, this looks like you.”
To my surprise, my friends didn’t just wear the shirts—they loved them. They asked for more. They told their friends. They started tagging me in photos. One of them even joked, “You should start your line.” That one-offhand comment stuck with me and planted a seed I couldn’t ignore.
What began as a hobby turned into something tangible. Something exciting. Something I couldn’t not pursue.
I started small, listing my first few shirt designs online through a basic storefront. I learned how to photograph my work, write copy that felt like me, and most importantly, listen to customer feedback. Slowly but surely, people beyond my circle of friends started buying my shirts. Then reordering. Then recommending. And before I knew it, I wasn’t just making shirts—I was building a brand.
That’s when I officially launched my label. It wasn’t backed by investors or built in a big studio. It was just me, my sewing machine, some late nights, and a whole lot of heart. And it worked. Because what I was offering wasn’t just clothing—it was connection. Every shirt had a story. Every design originated from genuine inspiration. That authenticity is what made people stick around.
Now, after years of experience in the trenches—from DIY printing and fabric sourcing to marketing, branding, and scaling—I decided it was time to put it all into a book. Not just for those who love fashion, but for anyone who’s ever thought, Could I turn this idea into a business?
Yes, you can. And I’m here to walk you through it.
In this book, I share everything I’ve learned along the way—how to start your clothing line from scratch, how to build a loyal customer base, and how to navigate the challenges of design, pricing, packaging, and growth without losing your voice or your sanity. It’s practical. It’s honest. And it’s rooted in the belief that your passion deserves a platform.
Whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine in your life or you’ve been crafting designs for years but haven’t leaped, I want this book to feel like sitting down with a friend who’s been there. Who made the mistakes, figured it out, and is now reaching back to pull you forward?
Outside of business, I’m just a guy who still gets excited when a new roll of fabric arrives. I love road trips with my wife, slow mornings with coffee, and moments where I see someone walk by wearing something I made. That never gets old.
This book is for the makers, the hustlers, the dreamers, and the doers. Suppose that’s you, welcome. I can’t wait to see what you’ll build.
