Flaherty's work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Nation, the Harvard Review, The North American Review, and scores of other journals. He has published five books, and appeared in numerous anthologies, including From the Belly of the Shark (Random House) and Heartland II (Northern Illinois University Press). He has also published a textbook, Humanizing the Computer (Wordsworth Publishing Company).
The author has read at twenty venues, including the Universities of Massachusetts, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. Foreign readings include the University of Mexico (Mexico City), and the Peacock Theatre (experimental branch of the Abbey Theatre, Dublin). He had his early poems recorded in the sound studio at Harvard. Received two National Endowment Grants for support of his poetry quarterly, Road Apple Review.
Flaherty wrote the narrative (illustrated by Daniel Wheeler) for a suspenseful comic book, The Plowshare. Also edited the graphic novel, Through the Habitrail, written/illustrated by Jeff Nicholson. Flaherty's three-act play, Blood Work, was given a dramatic reading at the Playwright Center (Minneapolis).
