Thien Nguyen

Dr. Thien T. Nguyen is a chemist, educator, and author whose career spans both academic research and scientific writing. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Houston (United States) in May 2017, following a Master of Science in Advanced Spectroscopy in Chemistry (ASC) at the University of Helsinki (Finland) in June 2011. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the Honor Program of the University of Science (VNU-HCM, Vietnam) in May 2008.

During his doctoral studies from 2012 to 2017, Dr. Nguyen served as a Teaching Assistant in Organic and General Chemistry labs at the University of Houston. In April 2018, he joined Duy Tan University in Da Nang, Vietnam, as a researcher and lecturer, where he taught both large lecture courses—such as “Organic Chemistry I”—and smaller introductory classes, including “Introduction to Chemistry,” while also supervising organic chemistry laboratory sessions.

Alongside his academic responsibilities, Dr. Nguyen has authored several books, including “Advanced Synthesis of Atropselective Biaryls/Heterobiaryls and Axially Chiral Tetrasubstituted Allenes” (2024) and “Overview Of Ketone α-Alkylation” (2024), both published via Kindle Direct Publishing. He is also preparing a forthcoming “Organic Chemistry Series (Multiple Choice Questions).” His research and scholarly work have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Chemistry, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, RSC Advances, and the European Journal of Organic Chemistry. These publications reflect his expertise in computational and synthetic organic chemistry, notably focusing on accurate predictions of NMR chemical shifts, atropselective synthesis, and organocatalytic methodologies.

In 2022, Dr. Nguyen began leading a funded project under the International Foundation for Science (IFS) on “Experimental and computational NMR in detection, structure elucidation, and kinetic analysis of lipid oxidation products in fried foods.” His achievements have attracted numerous accolades, including Certificates of Merit from the Chairman of Da Nang City People’s Committee for outstanding publications (2020–2024), a Pacifichem 2021 Early Career Chemist Grant, and recognition as an Outstanding Peer Reviewer by Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry. Earlier honors include a Chemical Biology Interdisciplinary Program Fellowship from the University of Houston (2013–2014) and an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship for the ASC program (2009–2011).

Dedicated to serving the broader scientific community, Dr. Nguyen has reviewed manuscripts for major journals such as Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, Chemical Science, and Chemistry – A European Journal. He has presented at numerous international conferences, from the 27th International Electronic Conference on Synthetic Organic Chemistry to the Pacifichem 2021 meeting. In spring 2024, he embarked on a new endeavor as a self-employed content writer in Da Nang, Vietnam—further blending his passion for clear, engaging science communication with his extensive background in research and teaching.
