Laura Gutman

Laura Gutman, a self-described “Army Brat,” has lived a life intertwined with the history of the U.S. military, experiencing many pivotal moments of the 20th century firsthand. Born before the outbreak of World War II in the now-historic station hospital of West Point Military Academy, Laura spent her childhood moving across the globe to support her father’s military assignments. By age 16, she had lived in 20 different places, each move shaping her unique perspective on the world and deepening her understanding of the sacrifice and service demanded of military families.

In Army Brat: World War II, Laura brings a rare viewpoint to life during the WWII era from the perspective of a child witness, blending personal memories with historical insights. Through her account, readers gain an intimate look at life on military bases, the challenges of wartime separations, and the family’s experience in post-war Germany as the Cold War emerged.

As an adult, Laura went on to become a physician and now considers herself a proud North Carolinian. She is happily married and has two accomplished daughters. Laura's childhood within the military world continues to influence her life, and she cherishes the values of service and resilience instilled in her from a young age.
