F. Scott Spencer

F. Scott Spencer (PhD, University of Durham, England) is the New Testament General Editor for The SBL Study Bible and author of commentaries on the Song of Songs, Gospel of Mark, Gospel of Luke, and Book of Acts and recent volumes on Passions of the Christ, Seven Challenges that Shaped the New Testament, and Vote Jesus Christ. He has special ongoing interests in the roles of women, emotions, and politics in biblical literature and Paul's philosophy of life in his letter to the Philippians.

He has been a tenured professor at Wingate University (NC) and Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (VA) and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) president of the Southeastern Commission for the Study of Religion (SECSOR). He regularly teaches and preaches in area churches and has served several interim pastorates. He has also acted in university, seminary, and community theater productions, including roles in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Fantasticks, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Godspell, Cotton Patch Gospel, and Shadowlands. He enjoys playing the guitar and singing 70s music and other folk and country tunes.
