I grew up in Tulsa Oklahoma with a science teacher Dad and a Mom who went back to school to get a degree in art education. My older brother was born blind so my perspective of the world was through the lens of education and how we interact with the world in different ways. I taught preschool through the fifth grade before going into teacher education in higher ed. Majoring in early childhood education taught me that all learning should be meaningful and creative. I came from a family of educators and was always encouraged to follow my interests. My experiences working as a junior editor at an educational publishing company and teaching in a low income school reinforced the ideas that engagement has to be the key in teaching. I taught in the public school system for 16 years and then in higher education at Portland State in Oregon and at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, retiring after 45 years in education.
