Romy Meerkin

The author, Romy Meerkin is an Australian, self-published author with a passion for dogs and the wonderful cause of animal rescue.

Romy completed her BA Fine Arts at the University of NSW in Australia and has travelled extensively, focused mainly in Central America over the past 5 years. Romy has lived and worked in Guatemala, a country which she has travelled to many times and accepted a one-year teaching contract in a small rural town, Panajachel, a few years ago. The small tourist town sits on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala and it is the gateway to the many indigenous cultures in the towns across the water. The lake is one of the worlds largest freshwater lakes, surrounded by three steep volcanoes, rising above it. The beauty and the colours surrounding the lake, the culture and kindness of the people in Panajachel, have kept Romy captivated ever since she first experienced Lake Atitlan's intoxicating charm. It was during this time, Romy became aware of the over population and mistreatment of dogs in Guatemala and was able to change the life of a dog she befriended during her time living beside this magnificent lake. Romy has since returned to Guatemala as a visitor to volunteer with an animal rescue foundation and continues to follow the lives of the dogs she helped to transform.
