Professor Emeritus, Geochemistry and Hydrogeology

Horst D. Schulz was born in Warnemünde in 1942 and spent his childhood here until the family’s escape from the German Democratic Republic led him to West Germany in the summer of 1954. Stuttgart, Aachen, Berlin, Kiel and Bremen were then the stations of his life. From 1986 until his retirement in 2007, he was head of the Department of Geochemistry and Hydrogeology at the University of Bremen. As a marine researcher, he was on many expeditions with the German research vessel Meteor in the South Atlantic. He has published his research findings in numerous scientific articles in specialist journals and in the textbook “Marine Geochemistry” (Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York). He received the Gustav Steinmann Medal from the Geological Association in 2005 and the Hans Stille Medal from the German Geological Society in 2009. Since 2005 he has been Honorary Professor at the First Institute of Oceanography in Qingdao, People’s Republic of China. In 2015, the Academia Andaluza de la Historia appointed him as its corresponding member. In 2004, however, he returned to his old homeland and, after fifty years of busy exile, he has been living in Warnemünde again for nearly twenty years as a retired writer with a passion for history.
