I was named after Sargent David John of 14th Battalion, RWF, who died on the Somme on July 10, 1916. My story started exactly 100 years later when I was gazing over the wood where my great uncle had violently died. Since then this story has taken to four countries and have met some incredible people. I have drunk Champagne in the Guards and Cavalry Club ( accidentally because I went to the wrong room when attending a lecture on 1918 there). I have met Presidents Da Souza of Portugal and President Macron of France in a Portuguese military cemetery near Lille. President Macron winked at me.
Harriet’s Eternal Tears is a novel, but it is true. Sylvia Pankhurst did give a lecture in Jerusalem Chapel and the Cyclist Battalion did cycle to their fate in 1918.
