William James Singleton was born in New York, NY and raised in Bronx, NY. He attended and graduated from Alfred E. Smith Vocational High School and joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve (USMCR) in June of 1995. He attended recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina and after graduation attended Marine Combat Training and Cryogenics Military Occupational School. Lance Corporal Singleton, USMCR, reported to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49, located in Newburgh, NY, in February of 1996, and served with the unit through several ranks and in multiple billets until 2010. During his time with the unit, he deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II, where he served as the Cryogenics Staff Non-Commissioned Officer-in-Charge.
In 2004, William joined the New York City Police Department (NYPD). He graduated as the Honor Sergeant of his recruit class and served as a patrol officer in the Bronx until 2006. In May of 2006, Police Officer Singleton resigned from the NYPD and joined the New York State Police (NYSP).
In 2006, Trooper Singleton graduated near the top of his recruit class and subsequently served as a road Trooper until 2014. During this time, Trooper Singleton was assigned to the State Police barracks in both Somers and Dover Plains, NY, and patrolled Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, and Columbia counties.
In 2014, Trooper Singleton was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the State Police barracks in Liberty, NY as a Line Sergeant, supervising the operational and administrative law enforcement activities of approximately 25 Troopers. Sergeant Singleton was later assigned to the State Police barracks in Wappingers and subsequently Dover Plains, NY.
In 2019, Sergeant Singleton was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned as Assistant Zone Commander for Zone 1, Troop NYC; covering the entirety of New York City, with direct responsibility for LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, as well as Grand Central and Penn train stations. In July of 2021, Lieutenant Singleton transferred to the Professional Standards Bureau - South Regional Office in Hopewell Junction, NY, where he handled complaints and investigations involving State Police sworn and non-sworn Members.
In August of 2021, then Sergeant Major Singleton having been promoted seven times (twice meritoriously) over the years, retired from the USMCR after 27 years of honorable service. During this time, Sergeant Major Singleton served with 6 different units, including Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 49, Support Company/6th Communications Battalion, Headquarters Company/6th Communications Battalion, Headquarters Company/4th Combat Engineer Battalion, Marine Air Support Squadron 6, and Marine Aircraft Group 49 (MAG-49). In his final assignment, Sergeant Major Singleton served as the Senior Enlisted Advisor for an aircraft group comprised of over 2000 Marines, Sailors and civilians; assigned to 9 separate units, located at 7 locations across the United States; and possessing 5 different type/model/series aircraft, and 100s of pieces of construction and aviation control equipment worth 100s of million dollars. Sergeant Major Singleton’s personal awards include a Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal 2nd award, Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal 8th award and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/hour glass and “M” devices.
In January of 2023, Lieutenant Singleton was transferred to Zone 3, Troop K, were he served as Assistant Zone Commander. In August of 2023, Lieutenant Singleton was promoted to Captain and is currently assigned to the Professional Standards Bureau - South Regional Office, as the Administrative Captain.
William holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the SUNY Empire State College and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Marist College. He is a member of the Guardians Association New York State Troopers and serves as the treasurer for his church. In 2021, William authored and published a book titled Musings on Leadership, based upon his knowledge and insights gained from decades of leading and following.
William is married to Racquel Singleton and has three children, William II, Gideon, and Genesis.
