Michael Docherty

Michael Docherty is an Assistant Professor of English at Appalachian State University, where he teaches literature of the 20th and 21st centuries, with particular emphases on African American literature, the literature of California, and genre fiction. He is the author of The Recursive Frontier: Race, Space, and the Literary Imagination of Los Angeles (2024) and co-editor of Los Angeles: A Literary History (2026). His writing has also appeared in Post45: Contemporaries, the Los Angeles Review of Books, Comparative American Studies, Crime Fiction Studies, and American Literary History. He formerly co-edited Post45: Contemporaries and has been a Fulbright Scholar at California State University, Long Beach.
