My brother and I rebuilt a 1931 Model A truck engine when we were teenagers. Because of who our father was, we also learned how to run a lathe, solder circuit boards, and drill and blast to make a tunnel in solid rock while we were still in high school. Then, a decade or more later, we both became Born-Again Christians, even though we were brought up with hardly any church background. I went on to be a machinist, later a carpenter, a pastor, a draftsman, and eventually a psychotherapist. Now, retired, my wide range of experience and knowledge gets wrapped into creative writing. I have a central obsession with the things of God, which means I tell stories about God's people and God's dealings with us. I am completely fascinated with both the big picture of the creation of the universe, and with the less spectacular small picture of how God works with us little people. There is nothing like a story to teach a point or clarify a phenomenon. We all love stories, and they provide us with quite foundational principles for life. Even unchurched people know some Bible stories, like David and Goliath, Samson and his hair, and Daniel in the lions' den. So let's have some more God stories that certainly could be true because the principles are unchangeable, even though they might take place on another planet or in another time.
