Amit Dutta

Amit Dutta is a filmmaker and author. His films have carved a niche for his unique experimental aesthetic and auteur cinema worldwide. As an author, his debut novel in Hindi 'Kaaljayi Kambakht' won the Krishna Baldev Vaid Fellowship Award for outstanding contribution to experimental fiction in 2016. His book of short-stories for children, ‘Gyarah Rupey Ka Fountain Pen’ was published in 2021. It was included in Tata Trust’s Parag Honours List 2022, as one of the best books for children, in an effort to promote good quality children’s literature in India. As a Tagore Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, he wrote 'INVISIBLE WEBS: An art-historical inquiry into the life and death of Jangarh Singh Shyam'. He has taught at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad and the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. His book ‘Asal Samriddhi Ke Akiri Sthamb’ explores the unique water-management system of the Kangra Valley in Himachal Pradesh, following the roles of water-masters called Kohlis. He continues to write for magazines, journals and books on a wide array of subjects in Hindi, English as well as his native tongue Dogri. His writings regularly feature in reputed journals like Samaas, India Today Hindi and Cycle Magazine.
