Brian Spalding

After receiving a B.S. in Biochemistry from Penn State, Brian completed a Ph.D. in Soil Chemistry at Cornell in 1976. He then post-doctored in Corvallis, Oregon, at the USEPA Environmental Research Laboratory. He moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he worked for thirty-three years at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as an environmental chemist. He worked with some of the best hydrologists, modelers, and other chemists, from all over the world, on the transport of radionuclides in watersheds and waste disposal areas. After retiring in 2010 and homesteading for several years up on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee, he and his spouse travelled full time, RVing in the U.S. and Canada for two years. They settled into the Blue Ridge area of North Carolina, building a home in 2017 in a biodiverse preserved community and wandering its trails in all seasons.
