Up until my mid 30s I worked as archaeologist, but a series of unlikely accidental meetings led to my training in stone conservation at Wells Cathedral.
Being of an independent turn of mind, I did not prosper in the strongly hierarchical cathedral environment and left to run my own conservation company. This educated me in all aspects of historic building repair and introduced me to the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, where I served a s committee member for many years.
Whilst I was contracting fate intervened again and wrenched me into the world of university lecturing.
I have hugely enjoyed teaching building conservation at Bournemouth, Kingston, and Cardiff universities, though my favourite course has been the Foundation level degree at the Building Crafts College.
My knowledge base is thus founded on personal curiosity, practical experience, the shared knowledge of fellow specialists and the enthusiasm and challenge of students.
It’s a rare blend that I lay at your service!
