Cheryl Thompson practiced as a critical care and air transport nurse before teaching at the University of Utah College of Nursing. In 2001 she moved to the University of Nebraska Medical Center where she taught graduate healthcare informatics, community health, and nursing leadership as well as supervised graduate students. From 2011 to 2017 she served as the Chief Student Affairs Officer. In this role she gained knowledge of and appreciation for the importance of racial, and gender diversity to society, healthcare, and education.
In 1999 she and her family became the guardian of a 16 year old woman who was fleeing a polygamist group. Thompson’s poetry reflects her understanding of the FLDS polygamist life style as lived in Utah in the later part of the 20th and early part of the 21st centuries.
Her latest book, “Inside my Husband’s Closet”, to be released April 16, 2024, reflects her experiences in the year after her husband came out as trans. Her perspectives were enriched by her career in healthcare and in education.
She and her wife are parents to two adult children and grandparents to two teenage boys. They make their home in north-east, Georgia.
