Daniel Benedict, a seasoned liturgist, pastor, and author, has significantly shaped liturgy and worship in The United Methodist Church and ecumenical circles. Front story with the publication of Groove in the Earth (Jan 23, 2024)

Though he has published three books and authored articles in many journals, he says that it is a thrill to hold a new book in hand. With the publication of Groove in the Earth, he wrote, "I am an introvert, a contemplative and a solitary. I am struggling with imagined notoriety and the 'shoulds' of marketing. Like the American Indians who left the prairies to ride and shoot and dance in the Wild West Shows (1865-1900), they found themselves exploited and enervated of who they were. So, I let go and let the book bear the gift where and when it is meant to be received, I can enjoy it and stay centered."

Back story:

With a career spanning almost three decades as a pastor in New York and California, Dan assumed the role of Worship Resources Director in 1993, becoming instrumental in shaping Methodist worship practices. His commitment extended to serving on significant committees, including the United Methodist Baptism Study Committee and the United Methodist Holy Communion Study Committee, playing a crucial role in defining the church's understanding of sacraments. He also contributed to the revision of Services for the Ordering of Ministry (2004).

A productive writer, Dan shared his expertise in liturgy and discipleship through articles in both church and academic periodicals. His authored books include "Contemporary Worship for the 21st Century" (co-authored with Craig Kennet Miller), "Come to the Waters"—a pastoral invitation to embrace ancient church disciple-making traditions, and "Patterned by Grace: How Liturgy Shapes Us" (2006).

Recently, he delved into nature poetry, releasing "Groove in the Earth: Poems from under the Breath" in January 2024. Illustrated by his sister, Rebecca Bialaszeski, this collection adds a unique dimension to his creative expression.

Beyond writing and committee work, Dan directed worship for the 1996, 2000, and 2004 General Conferences at the request of the Council of Bishops. His contributions transcended national boundaries, leading retreats and lectures internationally in Australia, Korea, and Singapore. He represented the Consultation of Common Texts for twelve years (1993-2005).

Academically, Dan holds a BA degree from Syracuse University and a Master of Divinity from the American Baptist Seminary of the West, supplemented by additional study at Claremont School of Theology. In 2003, he completed a certificate in Digital Culture Ministry. His intellectual pursuits extend to membership in the North American Academy of Liturgy. A long-time member of The Fellowship of United Methodists in Music & Worship Arts, he received its lifetime achievement award in 2007.

As a brother in the Order of Saint Luke, Dan served as abbot from 2009-2016. Currently, he leads the Order’s novitiate team, welcoming and accompanying those inquiring and discerning a vocation in the Order.

Post-retirement in 2005, Dan and life partner, MaryO, settled in Waialua, Hawaii, until 2020. Currently residing at Westminster at Lake Ridge in Woodbridge, VA, he continues his passion for teaching, writing, and consulting, actively leading online courses in sacramental theology and practice through BeADisciple.

Daniel is husband to Mary O (for 60 year!), with a son, Jon, in Hawai’i, and a daughter, Sara, in Virginia. As a proud grandfather to 6 boys and 4 girls, he finds delight not only in his professional pursuits but also in contemplative prayer, gardening, walking forest trails, and the immersive world of poetry—both reading and writing. With an enduring mission, Dan encourages congregations to embrace the means of grace and celebrate the Eucharist as normative Christian worship, embodying his commitment to spiritual growth and eco-spirituality.
