David Huerta: Bridging Cultures Through Children's Stories

David Huerta is a children’s book author whose stories introduce young readers to Japanese culture, language, and timeless traditions through warmth, curiosity, and heart.

Japan has been David’s home for more than 25 years, deeply shaping his perspective, creativity, and storytelling. His multi-award-winning debut children’s book, Grandma’s Lost Treasure: How Kintsugi Turns Brokenness into Beauty, reflects his fascination with Kintsugi—the Japanese art and philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection.

Before becoming an author, David taught English and cross-cultural communication in Kobe public schools for four years, working with students across six junior high schools and fifteen elementary schools. That experience gave him a lasting appreciation for how children learn through stories, play, humor, and cultural discovery.

David is also the founder of Ichigo Ichie Works, a creative imprint that brings together children’s books, Kintsugi art, and cultural learning experiences inspired by Japanese traditions. Its mission is to help children and families discover beauty in imperfection, joy in language, and meaning in every moment.

In addition to writing, David is the co-founder of a tech marketing firm, a husband, and a father of two teenagers. His home life is enriched by his wife, a kimono enthusiast, and by his family’s shared appreciation for Japanese tradition.

David’s hope is to create stories that build bridges between cultures, inspire curiosity, and encourage children to see beauty in themselves, in others, and in the world around them.
