For over 50 years, Randy Ross has been a deeply committed advocate for educational equity, in both early childhood and K-12. Currently, her writing focuses on these issues. Randy has a varied background, as a teacher, principal, consultant, coach, and professional development expert. She has taught preschool, served as a trainer in Head Start programs, and worked as a professional liaison for family day care providers. She was a middle school teacher and K-5 elementary school principal. For 15 years, at the New Jersey Office of Bias Crime and Community Relations and then at Brown University’s New England Assistance Center, Randy championed the cause of antibullying. Since 2014, Randy has served as an independent consultant and trainer, primarily with the National School Climate Center. This work, with schools, districts, and state departments of education, focused on reducing bias-related bullying through improved school climate.
Randy has had many roles with commissions and nonprofit organizations. These include being on the staff of the New Jersey Human Relations Council, Vice Chair of the Camden County Human Relations Council, Board Chair of the U.S. Friends of Open House (a Jewish-Muslim youth reconciliation program in Israel), National Advisor to SEL4US, and Board Co-chair of SEL4MA.
Randy has presented at dozens of conferences and webinars, publishing numerous articles in professional journals and magazines, both in print and online. One notable, widely cited example is “The Nature, Scope, and Utility of Formal Laws and Regulations that Prohibit School-Based Bullying and Harassment” (with Michael Greene) in the 2005 Proceedings of the Hamilton Fish Institute on School and Community Violence. A second example is “Creating Equitable School Climates” (with Philip Brown and Kori Hamilton-Biagas) in the May 2020 National Association of State Boards of Education’s journal, called the NASBE Standard.
Randy Ross received her B.A. and M.A. in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley and her M.S. from Bank Street College of Education.
