Ferdinando Cionti

I was born on 13 May 1938 in Maddaloni (Ce); I graduated in law in 1960 at the University of Naples Federico II; I practised the profession of lawyer in Milan, first at the firm of Avv. Giandomenico Pisapia, professor of criminal procedural law, father of the reform of criminal procedural law; then for eight years at the studio of Avv. Prof. Remo Franceschelli, professor of commercial law and industrial law at the State University of Milan; and finally as owner of the Studio Legale Cionti e Tagliagambe (Avv. Gianpaolo Tagliagambe), until 2003. In addition, I was a contract professor of Industrial Law for Management at the University of Milan Bicocca.

My conception of law is summarised in the 1991 article 'For a Return to Legal Certainty', in which - following Gustav Radbruch's theory on the purposes of law - I argued that the only purpose, both necessary and proper, of law is certainty.

My interest in the problems of the judiciary dates back to the 1970s, to which I have devoted numerous articles in specialist journals and newspapers. But this interest has been accentuated and expressed in a more continuous way since when, for specific professional assignments and then also as a contributor to 'l'Avanti', I followed the events of 'Mani Pulite' on a daily basis.

A selection of articles in 'l'Avanti' from March 1997 to September 1998 was published under the title:

Then I was a contributor to magazines and newspapers - and among these most frequently to l'Opinione - in which I published several hundred articles on the most diverse topics and, mainly, on the judiciary and its relations with politics.
