Ken Webster grew up in Calhoun County, Illinois, where it was common place to see Native American mounds among the hills and find artifacts in creek beds and farmers’ fields. He is an elementary/middle school science specialist, teaching at elementary through post-graduate levels. Upon retiring from teaching in public schools, Ken joined the Cahokia Mounds Society, where his interest in local indigenous people expanded, especially when Cahokia sponsored a field trip to satellite sites of the great indigenous city of Cahokia. He was surprised to learn that the Grassy Lake Village was located on land where the present-day Wood River Refinery was established, in his own backyard. Thus, Ken gained inspiration to research and record a history of this important site with the writing of this book.
