Doug Crawford

Doug's Journey in the Realm of Computing and Beyond

At Bucknell University, Doug studied Mathematics and Chemistry and was introduced to programming in Fortran 2 and IBM 1620 assembly language. After graduation, he began his career at Western Electric as a Statistical Quality Control Engineer and Manufacturing Manager. He developed a number of practical computer applications.

A turning point came with a Bell System Fellowship to attend Cornell University, leading to an MS in Operations Research. It was here, that Doug's met Barb, marking the beginning of a lifelong marriage.

At Western Electric, Doug developed methodology for forecasting telephone demand which had broad application in regional planning.

At Texas Instruments, Doug's leadership spanned across multiple departments over fifteen years. His tenure was marked by work in Artificial Intelligence, using LISP machines for Software Defect Analysis in MOS Memory Production. A notable achievement was the development of TIGA (Texas Instruments Graphics Architecture), a cornerstone in PC graphics acceleration, which earned him patents and critical acclaim, including a Byte Magazine Product of the Year award.

Doug's journey then led him to Rochester, NY, to join Harris RF Communications. Here, he spearheaded the integration of TIGA software in military applications, notably enhancing image transmission capabilities of special operations forces. His work in developing an ASIC for tactical manpack radios earned him the Harris Sector President's Innovation Award and additional patents.

Concluding his career, Doug ventured into the realm of web applications, ascending to the role of VP of Applications Development at Entre Computer Systems.

In retirement, Doug dedicates his time to crafting novels and non-fiction books. His days are enriched by golf, pickleball, the joy of grandchildren, and enjoying time with Barb.
