Stéphane P. A. Bordas

Stéphane Bordas, Chair of Computational Mechanics at the University of Luxembourg, Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, received his education in France and the USA where he earned his PhD from Northwestern University (2004). He became full professor in 2009 at Cardiff University, where he led the Institute of Mechanics and Advanced Materials. He is the founding director of the Doctoral Programme of Computational and Data Science (Now Complex Systems Science) at the University of Luxembourg.

His research interests include the development and application of computational methods in structural mechanics, materials science, energy, environmental science, archaeology, medicine and bioengineering. Professor Bordas is a renowned expert in developing numerical methods to solve complex engineering and multi-disciplinary problems and helping users develop intuition on counter-intuitive complex systems.

To date, he authored over 300 papers, in prestigious international journals. His research has been cited over 22,000 times. He and his team received many awards and distinctions, including the Beltrami prize and Fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales.

As an active member of the international engineering community, he reviews for numerous funding agencies and serves on the editorial boards of several leading journals. He is also known for his mentorship and leadership abilities, which he applied to develop strong multi-disciplinary teams. Professor Bordas is also the Editor-In-Chief of Advanced in Applied Mechanics, a highly respected journal in the field of Mechanics.
