Diego Piay Augusto

My name is Diego Piay Augusto, and I am from Pontevedra. I have been working in the field of archaeology for more than twenty years. During this time, I have participated in over 150 archaeological interventions, holding all the main positions associated with the profession: assistant, technician, and excavation director. At present, I combine my professional practice with university teaching and historical research. This experience has led me to understand that the study of the past must be approached in an integral way: excavating, writing, and teaching are the only possible means of achieving the ultimate goal — recovering history and transmitting it to society.

My work as an archaeologist has been carried out mainly in Galicia, although I have also taken part in excavations at emblematic sites such as Pompeii and Villa Romana del Casale. As a historian, my main field of interest is the figure of Priscillianus and the Priscillianist movement, a topic on which I obtained my PhD with distinction (cum laude) and International Mention in 2016. However, my research has also focused on Roman villas, as well as on the recovery of historical biographies and the study of some of the most significant monuments in Galicia. The result of this work has been the publication of ten books and more than one hundred academic papers.
