I was a middle school teacher in 2018 when a few students approached me with their fears that their undocumented parents would be deported. Thus began my journey with my previous three books to depict those who flee the profound hardships they face to come to the United States, not as criminals as some describe them, but as survivors. In my forthcoming biographical fiction, DARK SHADOWS HOVER, to be released on January 26, 2025, revealed is the saga of Moris Albahari's early life, a Sephardic Jew who fights the Nazis and their collaborators for Tito's Partisans in the former Yugoslavia during World War II. Though Moris did not emigrate to the U.S., his story explores the universal theme of overcoming the trauma of war to reach the jgged edges of resilience.
