Phillip Michael Shirley

Phillip Michael Shirley writes stories about people on the margins—individuals shaped by memory, desire, loss and the search for belonging. His work combines narrative urgency with a strong sense of place and an atmosphere that often lingers long after the final page.

His books include The Rivers That Run Through Us, The Happening of Magic and the forthcoming psychological noir Darlene. Together they reflect an enduring fascination with belonging, desire and the fragile boundaries between reality and perception.

Earlier in his career Phillip worked as a journalist before becoming an author with HarperCollins, where he published five non-fiction books, including The Soul of Boxing, longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year. Those books explored sport, biography and human resilience, experiences that continue to influence the emotional depth of his fiction today.

He was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1965 and now lives in London.

He is currently completing Darlene, a psychological noir exploring desire, diagnosis and who controls the story.
